Communication

At Newfriars College we have a dedicated Communication Team to assess, develop and plan progression routes in communication for our students.

Communication development is fundamental to the needs of all our students as this enables them to express themselves through making good choices, sharing thoughts and feelings and having a ‘voice’ in the wider community. Our students have a wide range of complex communication needs and as a team we work together to create personalised communication strategies and access methods for each individual. These include:

  • Makaton sign/Symbols
  • Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)
  • Pictures/Photographs/Objects
  • Eye-gaze/eye-pointing/Etran frame
  • Switch access
  • Auditory Scanning
  • High tech/Low tech communication devices/Communication Books
  • Clarity of speech/Development of language skills

Our staff have an in-depth understanding of all our students and their individual communication systems and strategies. We work closely with speech therapists, communication support therapists for both Hearing Impaired  and Visually Impaired and occupational therapists to develop and provide opportunities throughout the college.
